Tracking with Google Tag ID

Google Analytics

Click here to learn more about using Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager (GTM) with Blackthorn Events.

With the Event Tracking feature, Event Organizers can track Event traffic and Attendees’ purchase summary details, providing better visibility into revenue and Attendee behavior. The tracking is delivered through your Google Tag Manager container.

The "Event Items: Available vs. Waitlisted" and "Event Groups" sections describe the data collected for those objects.

To set this up, enter your Google Tag Manager container ID on the Company Info record to cover your whole org, or in the GTM Container ID field on an Event Settings record to override it for specific events. Your GA4 measurement ID goes into a GA4 tag inside your container. See Google Tag Manager for step-by-step instructions.

NOTE: One of the data points collected is the Event’s Currency. If an Event’s Currency field is blank, the collected currency will be “USD.”

Google Analytics Id field on the Event record

The Google Analytics Id field on the Event record is legacy. It uses Google’s retired Universal Analytics library and does not work with GA4 measurement IDs, the ones that begin with G-. A value entered there is saved, but no tag is added to your event pages, so no data reaches your GA4 property. Leave the field blank and use Google Tag Manager instead.

Event Items: Available vs. Waitlisted

Waitlisted-Only Event Items

When an Attendee registers for only waitlisted Event Items, the following information will be captured: currency, quantity of waitlisted Event Items, and a list of the waitlisted items (label, quantity, currency, waitlisted = true).

Waitlisted + Available Event Items

When an Attendee registers for a combination of available and waitlisted Event Items, the following information will be captured:

  • Available Event Items: the currency, quantity, and a list of the Event Items (label, quantity, amount, total (amount * quantity), and currency)
  • Waitlisted Event Items: the currency, quantity of waitlisted Event Items, and a list of the waitlisted Event Items (label, quantity, currency, waitlisted = true)

Available Event Items

When an Attendee registers for only available Event Items, the following information will be captured: currency, quantity, and a list of the Event Items (label, quantity, amount, total (amount * quantity), and currency).

Multiple Waitlisted Event Items

When an Attendee registers for different waitlisted Event Items, the following information will be captured for each unique waitlisted Event Item: the currency and quantity of that Event Item, and a list of those waitlisted items (label, quantity, currency, waitlisted = true).

For example, if the Event includes four Event Items and each one is waitlisted, then there will be four sets of information, each containing the currency and quantity of that Event Item, as well as a list of those waitlisted items (label, quantity, currency, waitlisted = true).

Event Groups

To help Google Analytics capture and report on metrics for visits to an Event Group webpage, the following information will be gathered when a user visits an Event Group URL.

  • Event Group Name
  • Timestamp or the date/time the visit occurred

No checkout-related data (checkoutId, tickets) should be present.

Additionally, when an Attendee goes to an Event webpage from an Event Group, the Event Group Name, Event Name, and timestamp will be saved.
